Clarence Morgan

Clarence Morgan - Between Nature & Abstraction

This intensive painting workshop will treat "abstract" as a verb rather than a style. We will emphasize the characteristics and formal elements of abstraction found in nature while simultaneously exploring the spirit of abstraction as a vehicle of expression. This class will challenge students to translate and transform natural forms as well as devise new forms in the creation of their work. Designed for students who are predisposed toward independent studio work in painting. Intermediate/advanced level. Code 01d

This class will cover historical and contemporary uses of painting basics, transfers, collage, dipping, pouring, and combining oil and wax, as well as safety and presentation. All levels. Code 06d

Session 7

August 23 - August 29

Ruth Marten

Ruth Marten - Illustrating the Personal Narrative

As an illustrator and artist I've had experience working with printed material of every kind. I propose that we reinvent the world (at least on paper) to our own satisfaction by correcting and improving upon what's gone before. We will use maps, natural history engravings, books, and board games as our models. Our goal will be to engage our imaginations to the max and create convincing documents. Come with a vivid imagination, a good sense of humor, and familiarity with our legacy of printed words and images. All levels. Code 07d

Studio artist; teaching: School of Visual Art (NYC), Parsons School of Design (NYC); exhibitions: Saatchi Gallery (London), Adam Baumgold Gallery (NYC), Todd Hosfelt Gallery (San Francisco), Isis Gallery (London).
